Sheppard Robson is a major London-based architecture practice founded in 1938 by Sir Richard Sheppard which also has large studios in Manchester and Glasgow.

The firm, based in Camden, works on projects worldwide and has been involved with various landmark projects including Phase 2 BBC Broadcasting House, Churchill College Cambridge, the Toyota/Lexus HQ in Manchester, the redevelopment of the Royal Mint and overseas, Siemens Middle East HQ in Abu Dhabi.

Meanwhile, a project where Sheppard Robson’s architecture and interior design teams worked, Roots in the Sky on London’s Southbank, recently won the MIPIM Award for Best New Development.

The firm converted to an LLP in April 2014 and the latest accounts of the new entity, Sheppard Robson Architects LLP, suggest it has put in a solid performance in the aftermath of the pandemic. In the year to end-March 2022, turnover at the group rose to £27.9 million from £25.34 million previously, whilst pre-tax profits slipped to £5.32 million from £5.53 million, previously. Net assets stood at £5.24 million, down from £5.6 million and the group had cash of £4.3 million, down from £6.6 million and declared its financial position at the year-end was ”satisfactory”.

Key Projects

Sheppard Robson has maintained its involvement in a range of significant projects and landmark schemes in major cities around the country.

A key win for the practice came in late 2022 with its appointment on first phase of the huge redevelopment of the Earls Court Exhibition Centres site in west London. Working alongside Serie Architects and dRMM, Sheppard Robson will lead the Hammersmith & Fulham part of phase 1, which will include up to 1,300 mixed tenure homes and cultural and office space and where construction is set to start in 2025.

In May 2023, Sheppard Robson’s design for the University of Liverpool’s school of environmental sciences achieved detailed planning approval from the city council. The project reuses the existing early-1900s Derby and Hartley buildings which originally housed the school of zoology.  

Earlier in February 2023, the £31 million Sheppard Robson-designed Ev0 Building at Didsbury Technology Park in Manchester received planning permission. The scheme, for property company Bruntwood, aims to make the building net zero in terms of both its construction and ongoing operation.

Elsewhere in Manchester, Sheppard Robson recently won a planning permission which paved the way for a new 350,000 sq ft office building on Plot C3 of the MediaCity masterplan for a Peel L&P/ Landsec joint venture.

Meanwhile in the capital, permission was granted in summer 2022 for Boundary Hotel, a 311-room hotel, community and co-working spaces, along rooftop restaurant designed by the firm on the eastern fringe of the City of London.

Glenigan data

Figures from Glenigan data point to a busy workload at Sheppard Robson. It shows that the firm is architect on a major £100.2million development of 500 flats and commercial space at Whitehall Riverside in Leeds for Town Centre Securities and Glenbrook Property where work is set to start in summer 2023 (Project ID: 22028684). Sheppard Robson is also an architect on a £39.3 million school rebuild project at Patchway Community School in Bristol for the Department of Education where work is due to start in late 2023 (Project ID: 21339578).
