CampbellReith is a leading multidisciplinary engineering practice which works across the private and public sectors from offices in London, Bristol, Birmingham and Manchester.

The firm recently celebrated its 60th anniversary and in Bristol, has moved to new offices in the former HTV studios building.

Formed in 1960, the firm provides specialist services ranging from feasibility and planning to the final design & construction process and it works across all main market sectors including commercial, education, health, industrial, residential, regeneration, retail, defence, sport and leisure.

The group employs around 130 staff and provides services covering structural, civil, geotechnical, land quality, environmental, highways and transport, BIM & 3D Modelling and GIS.

Flagship projects where CampbellReith has worked include Radley College Clock Tower Court, boarding school near Oxford; the Islamic Centre in Oxford and, Woolston Riverside regeneration scheme in Southampton. It also worked on Oak Cancer Centre in Sutton for The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and on the Proton Beam Therapy centre, a cancer treatment in central London. The firm was also widely involved in the 2012 Olympics. Clients include Bouygues UK, Kier, Wates Construction and Balfour Beatty.

CampbellReith was inevitably impacted by the pandemic but has since seen a ‘moderate increase in demand’ for engineering consultancy services and its work linked to the events and exhibitions sector increased towards pre-pandemic levels by summer 2022.

The firm has seen the education and housing sectors staying very active and today it is seeing opportunities in the life sciences sector. It has also been kept busy with ‘large strategic infrastructure schemes’.

The group won a gold at the Green Apple Environment Awards 2022 – along with Surrey County Council and Toureen Group – for its project at The Downs, Caterham, Surrey.

The firm features amongst the NCE100 league table of consultants and it was shortlisted for the leader in the collaboration category for 2019 in the NCE awards.

In common with most firms in the industry, the lockdown has impacted the firm. In the 12 months to end-July 2022, Campbell Reith Hill LLP reported a group pre-tax profit of £1.234 million, compared to £1.51 million previously, on a turnover of £12.96 million, up from £12.6 million. Meanwhile, profit for sharing among partners was £1.234 million, down from £1.5 million. Cash at bank for the group stood at £722,537, down from £1.94 million and net assets were £2.64 million.

Operations

CampbellReith operates across a wide variety of sectors on work ranging from major projects to long-term commissions. It is one of 15 engineering consultants on the Homes and Communities Agency Engineering Panel and is a member of the Tibbalds Multidisciplinary Team, which sits on the HCA’s Multidisciplinary Consultants Panel.

Projects where the firm has been involved in early 2023 include a Homes England development of 550 homes on a former site of a china clay drying works at Coypool Park near Plymouth. A masterplan by CampbellReith, LDA Design and The Environment Partnership will transform the derelict site on the edge of the city.

CampbellReith designed the recently-opened Dukes Meadow Thames Path Footbridge at Barnes Bridge. The design was to RIBA Stage 3 and stakeholders involved included the Port of London Authority, Network Rail and various boat clubs.

Meanwhile, in autumn 2022, CampbellReith was commissioned by LDA Design to provide civil engineering support to the Paytherden Solar Farm, East Devon. The new 49 MW solar energy plant for Lightrock Power covers more than 170 acres and will deliver energy to nearly 15,000 homes.

CampbellReith is also a member of MERGE, a network of 17 European consulting engineers in 15 countries with a total workforce of around 2,000. The firm has also worked widely in the Middle East and Africa and has strong links with locals in its various specialisms.

Figures from Glenigan point to a healthy workload at CambellReith. The firm is a geotechnical consultant on the £150 million TOSP Development to build three laboratory and office buildings at Oxford Science Park where work is due to start in summer 2023 (Project ID: 22351947). Meanwhile, CampbellReith is also a consultant on a £6 million project to redevelop a former Bentalls Department Store at Bracknell in Berks where work is due to start in late summer 2023 (Project ID: 20490313).
